Vicuña socks are named after the wild ancestor of the domesticated Alpaca which live at high altitude in the Andes mountains of South America. The wool of the Alpaca is referred to as the Wool of the Gods because it was only permitted to be worn by Inca Royalty, who were revered as Gods.

Alpaca Wool is extremely fine and soft while also being very durable, having a higher tensile strength than sheep's wool (including Merino). The softness comes from the wool fibres having a very small diameter with little surface texture or "scale" compared with other wool.
