The Best Gift Ideas for the Outdoor Enthusiast at Open Air
Open Airists, it’s that time again!
Green Street has never looked prettier with christmas lights criss-crossing the iconic cobbled roadway creating a very magical experience when the sun goes down. And with Christmas mere weeks away, our stores are a hive of activity.
Whilst Christmas shopping can be a rather overwhelming prospect, one normally has a few easy people on their list to buy for and we’re pretty sure outdoor enthusiasts fall into that camp.
(There is ALWAYS room for another tool, backpack or gadget to add to the kit inventory!)
Here is Open Air’s round up of the best gifts for the outdoor enthusiast in your life.
A quality down jacket
An absolute staple in for any outdoor enthusiast. Lightweight, incredibly warm and easily compressed into the smallest of spaces, a down jacket is a must have for winter adventures.
The ever-excellent Rab Microlight Alpine, available in men’s and women’s, is a classic and is as popular on the streets as it is in the hills. You’ll also find similar options from Fjällräven, Sherpa, Haglöfs and Mammut within our store. For those more intrepid adventurers, consider the Haglof’s Essens Mimic which looks, feels and functions like down but is actually a man-made fibre which will retain a greater amount of warmth if it gets wet.
We at Open Air are pretty keen on our walking poles. In fact, we’re so keen, we have a microsite devoted to the sales and spares for LEKI trekking and nordic walking poles.
Walking poles make for an excellent gift, particularly adjustable models which allow the user to tailor the pole length to their height. Our pick is the LEKI Khumbu Lite which features a comfortable cork handle, lightweight aluminium lower sections and Speedlock+ locking levers for easy length adjustment. For taller / heavier users, the Khumbu is available in a ‘strong’ version which is made of larger diameter lower sections. Both Khumbu Lite and Khumbu Strong poles are both available in Anti-Shock options, a worthwhile investment for walkers that suffer from wrist injuries or arthritis.
LED Headlamp / Torch
Another staple for the avid adventurer. With LED technology creating brighter lights that last longer, a quality LED Headlamp or hand-held torch will always make for an excellent gift.
Our picks are Black Diamond’s latest head torch offerings including the Black Diamond Cosmo. The Cosmo is a no-nonsense headlamp that boasts 225 lumens with intuitive operation and dimmable spot, flood and redlight modes. Hand-held torches continue to be popular gifts and we think the Nebo Lil’Larry is the perfect stocking filler this year. This pen-sized, all-metal torch features a clip and magnetic base to throw all 250 lumens of fury onto whatever you’re doing, all for £10!
Quality outdoor gloves make for an excellent gift for the adventurer in your life and we think the Wakayama Glove from legendary Swedish outdoor brand Hestra are the perfect candidate. Made These retro-inspired gloves are made from an incredibly supple cow hide, are lined with a knitted wool ‘terry’ lining for warmth and finished with a simple paracord wrist adjustment. Functional, stylish and fit ‘like a glove’.
If you have a hiking enthusiast in your life, consider gifting them a pair of good quality walking shoes this Christmas. We carry a vast array of men’s and women’s walking boots and walking shoes in all different shapes and sizes for a variety of adventures. For outdoorsy folk that require wide-fitting footwear, look no further than our healthy selection of Meind’s purpose-built wide ‘Comfort Fit’ walking boots and walking shoes. Pictured is the Meindl Palermo, a premium walking shoe for men and women with a nubuck leather upper, GORE-TEX waterproof lining and re-solable sole made in Germany.
With nearly 30 years providing walking boot and walking shoe fitting and advice, we’ve never seen anything anything cooler to put on your feet than Stance Socks. Stance have turned socks into one of the world’s most exciting accessories and are now the official on-court sock of the NBA. Aside from the amazing colours and patterns, what has impressed us most in their outdoor range is the fit. Being seamless and anatomically-shaped (meaning they’re left and right foot specific), there is no annoying bunching. With a mix of different wool and synthetic blends available, they’re as functional as they are cool.
Beanie / Neck Warmer
One can never have too many winter beanies or neck warmers, so naturally they make excellent gifts!
Stocked floor to ceiling full, we’re sure to have something for your outdoorsy person. Staff pick this year is the Outdoor Research Lily beanie. Classically-styled and complete with pom-pom, it is sure to be any head’s best friend this winter.
Winter headwear is not complete without mentioning the humble neck warmer for which there is only one name in the business: Buff. Pictured is the Lyne Polar, a simple rib-knit neck warmer lined with soft and warm Primaloft fleece. You’ll be hard pressed to find something cosier.
A reliable knife or multi-tool
A good quality knife or multi-tool makes for an excellent gift that your outdoorsy person is guaranteed to get a heap of used out of. Pictured here is the No.6 by French knife masters, Opinel which features a locking Sandvik 12C27 stainless blade and natural beech wood handle. An absolute staff favourite.
Fjällräven Kånken Essentials
Launched earlier this year, Fjällräven’s Kånken Essentials were an instant hit with customers and are bound to impress the outdoor enthusiast in your life.
With a range of different pockets, pouches, wallets and sleeves available, the Fjällräven Kånken Essentials are a must-have for any Fjällräven Kånken fan. Pictured are these super-neat Pen Cases available in 10 different colours as well as the newly released Kånken Sling which would make for an excellent travel companion this Christmas.
A warm cozy knitted sweater
Grandma’s Christmas jumper has some competition this Christmas. Introducing Sherpa’s knitwear range, available in both men’s and women’s styles. These traditional sweaters are constructed from a blend of merino and alpaca wool with a mix of synthetic fibres making for an incredibly toasty experience.
This is possibly the most coolest compass we’ve come across and is bound to be a hit with your outdoorsy person. Don’t let the size fool you! This isn’t the sort of toy to fall out of a Christmas cracker! The Suunto Mini Clipper is a full-featured jewel bearing compass with glow in the dark markings and a rotating bezel that can be clipped to just about anything. Be prepared this Christmas and check it out!
