Boasting some of the best packs and sleeping bags on the market, today we’re exploring what makes this incredible brand tick and highlighting some of our favourite initiatives they run that any outdoor lover can get on board with!

Whether you’ve never heard of Deuter before or are already an avid fanatic, hopefully you’ll learn something fun and new about this awesome brand and how they can help you on your next adventure!

About Deuter

Founded in 1898, Deuter was created by Hans Deuter in Augsburg-Oberhausen, Germany. By 1900, the company actually supplied the Bavarian Royal Mail with mailbags and post sacks…As you can imagine, those bags needed to be reliable and structurally sound, so the seeds of Deuter’s incredibly sturdy bags were sown! From there, Deuter continued to expand their reach into tents, satchels and bags designed for military and personal use.

It wasn’t until 1953 however that Deuter really came into their own and were to reach new heights (literally!) following Austrian climber Hermann Buhl’s first ascent of the Nanga Parbat in Pakistan using Deuter backpacks, bags and tents.

Nanga Parbat is known to be one of the most difficult climbs in the world and has earned the nickname Killer Mountain for its high number of climber fatalities. Buhl is the only mountaineer to have made the first ascent of an eight-thousander solo. He returned 41 hours later, having barely survived the arduous climb to the summit- in fact they even made a documentary on it!

Since then, Deuter has continued to put outdoor sports and the passion for adventuring at the forefront of all they do. They understand the importance of safety and reliable kit so are proud of their product’s longevity and versatility for almost any eventuality!

Here are just a handful of our favourite Deuter initiatives!

Commitment to sustainability

If there’s one thing we love it’s a brand who are committed to environmental protection and are aware of their impact on the planet. In Deuters own words: “Every journey begins with a single step. And step by step we are nearing our destination. Our aim is to reduce the negative environmental impact of our company’s activities and to become active environmental guardians.”

We think that’s pretty awesome!

Deuter are also amidst a selected handful of manufacturers that follow the bluesign® standard, the world’s strictest standard of environmental impact and sustainability. These incredibly strict protocols have led to countless innovations, one such being Deuter’s adaptation of using polyester fabrics – Now the brand has discovered a far cleaner process and incorporated it into their manufacturing process. Deutuer says they now use around 640,000 metres of black polyester fabric in a year, but by adapting their dyeing process, 2,500 tonnes of water and nearly 7,000 kW of energy are saved every year.

Likewise, it’s pretty easy to see that the biggest environmental impact that Deuter is making bags and sacks that are built to last a lifetime! Ultimately no manufacturing process can match the environmental benefits of keeping your old backpack living for years to come!

Finally, one of our favourite Deuter initiatives is their ‘Dirtbag’ project. Together with the DAV (German Alpine Association) Summit Club, They helped create a bag that is an ambassador for a more considered and caring approach to nature. Designed for an easy way of litter collecting and reusable storage, €1 of each dirtbag price goes directly to one of the Bergwald Offensive ’s projects. Neither Deuter, the DAV Summit Club nor the dealers earn a single cent from the €3 sale of the dirtbags.
